A design decision made decades ago called the Global Interpreter Lock, or GIL. You can create multiple Python interpreter threads in a process, but the GIL places a lock on the entire interpreter. The effect is that only one thread of the interpreter can run at any given time, essentially limiting Python to a single core/thread.
