Web Reference: Dec 13, 2025 · In C, strcmp () is a built-in library function used to compare two strings lexicographically. It takes two strings (array of characters) as arguments, compares these two strings lexicographically, and then returns some value as a result. First of all standard C function strcmp compares elements of strings as having type unsigned char. Secondly the parameters should be pointers to constant strings to provide the comparison also for constant strings. The strcmp() function compares two strings and returns an integer indicating which one is greater. For this comparison characters at the same position from both strings are compared one by one, starting from the left until one of them does not match or the end of a string has been reached.
