But I'm not sure how easy it is to upgrade e.g. the kernel without doing a "Live HDD" rebuild. The current system uses iPXE configuration as the following (relevant lines shown), and it's working fine: It covers how to prepare the base system, copy the root filesystem into a dedicated directory, create an initramfs image (including Casper boot scripts), compress the system into a SquashFS image, and finally how to set up a bootable USB drive using GRUB with the boot=casper option.
