We can pass pointers to the function as well as return pointer from a function. Read this chapter to learn the different ways in which a function in a C program returns a pointer. If a function has a local variable or a local array, then returning a pointer of the local variable is not acceptable because it points to a variable that no longer exists. Returning a pointer from a function is especially fraught with risk, because the pointer is initialized in a totally different piece of code (that's often not even visible to the caller), and the callers do not know how to treat the result. A good documentation for such functions is very important.
