It's a feature that a lot of developers miss, especially since many people see assert statements as harmless debugging helpers. Aug 25, 2022 · Python can run scripts in optimized mode (python -O) which turns off debugs, removes assert statements, and IIRC it also removes docstrings. However, I have not seen it used. Nov 1, 2023 · We had to add a custom codebase test to verify that importing every module works with -OO, because we had a botched a release once, where a module tried to naively string format a dynamic docstring, which of course blew up in -OO mode.
