Web Reference: Jul 30, 2022 · Many languages have been designed with both facilities and syntactical differences, but I can't for the life of me work out what you can do with multidimensional arrays that you can't do with nested arrays, or infer confidently the reasons for their separate existence. An array of arrays will always occupy a contiguous block of memory, but the pointers in an array of pointers will each refer to their own (often disjoint) blocks of memory. To pass a multi-dimensional array to a function, you need to use pointers instead of subscripts. However, using a subscripted array is more convenient than using pointers, which can be difficult for new learners.
