Web Reference: The Needleman–Wunsch algorithm is an algorithm used in bioinformatics to align protein or nucleotide sequences. It was one of the first applications of dynamic programming to compare biological sequences. The algorithm was developed by Saul B. Needleman and Christian D. Wunsch and published in 1970. [1] . The basic idea is to build up the best alignment by using optimal alignments of smaller subsequences. The Needleman-Wunsch algorithm is an example of dynamic programming, a discipline invented by Richard Bellman (an American mathematician) in 1953! Mar 17, 2021 · In a bottom-up iterative approach we can use dynamic programming. We define the order of computing sub-problems in such a way that a solution to a problem is computed once the relevant sub-problems have been solved. In particular, simpler sub-problems will come before more complex ones.
