Such information might otherwise be put in a Pod specification or in a container image. Using a Secret means that you don't need to include confidential data in your application code. ConfigMaps only contain string data (the type is map[string]string), so the JSON serialization just outputs the string. Secrets are populated in Kubernetes using Secrets resources. The values are actually base64 encoded strings, which is how Kubernetes stores secrets in its database. When creating a Secrets manifest you must base64 encode your string values.
