One socket (node) listens on a particular port at an IP, while the other socket reaches out to the other to form a connection. A file descriptor is an integer that the OS hands to our process that we can use syscalls on to read/write data (e.g., read, write) or otherwise modify (e.g., fcntl) To the kernel, a socket is an endpoint of communication. To an application, a socket is a file descriptor that lets the application read/write from/to the network. Sockets are protocol independent and language independent. In Socket terms a connections between two processes in called an association.
