Web Reference: Jul 23, 2025 · Dilation is the opposite of erosion and is used to increase the size of objects in an image. Purpose: To join adjacent objects, fill small holes, and enhance features. Fundamentally morphological image processing is similar to spatial filtering. The structuring element is moved across every pixel in the original image to give a pixel in a new processed image. The value of this new pixel depends on the morphological operation performed. The two most widely used operations are Erosion and Dilation. Morphological operations apply a structuring element to an input image and generate an output image. The most basic morphological operations are: Erosion and Dilation. They have a wide array of uses, i.e. : Isolation of individual elements and joining disparate elements in an image.
