Web Reference: Feb 2, 2026 · The Comparator interface in Java is used to define custom sorting logic for objects. It belongs to java.util package allows sorting of objects of user-defined classes without modifying their source code. Comparators can also be used to control the order of certain data structures (such as sorted sets or sorted maps), or to provide an ordering for collections of objects that don't have a natural ordering. It is easier to use the Comparable interface when possible, but the Comparator interface is more powerful because it allows you to sort any kind of object even if you cannot change its code.
