Web Reference: Apr 28, 2025 · In Python, escape characters are used when we need to include special characters in a string that are otherwise hard (or illegal) to type directly. These are preceded by a backslash (\), which tells Python that the next character is going to be a special character. To insert characters that are illegal in a string, use an escape character. An escape character is a backslash \ followed by the character you want to insert. An example of an illegal character is a double quote inside a string that is surrounded by double quotes: In a string literal, hexadecimal and octal escapes denote the byte with the given value; it is not necessary that the byte encodes a character in the source character set. In a Unicode literal, these escapes denote a Unicode character with the given value.
