Web Reference: Ruby Hashes, Symbols, & Values In Ruby hashes, key symbols and their values can be defined in either of two ways, using a => or : to separate symbol keys from values. A Hash object maps each of its unique keys to a specific value. A hash has certain similarities to an Array, but: An array index is always an integer. A hash key can be (almost) any object. The original syntax for a hash entry uses the “hash rocket,” =>: h # => {foo: 0, bar: 1, baz: 2} If you do string comparisons, Ruby can compare symbols just by comparing their object ids, without having to evaluate them. That's much faster than comparing strings, which need to be evaluated.
