Function annotations are nothing more than a way of associating arbitrary Python expressions with various parts of a function at compile-time. Until that day (which will never come), the main uses of Python's function annotations will be the one-off uses described in the other answers. For the time being, you can forget about smart static analyzers, compiler assurances, java-based tool chains, etc.
