The first pointer is used to store the address of the variable, and the second pointer is used to store the address of the first pointer. That is why they are also known as a pointer to pointer. A pointer variable can store the address of any type including the primary data types, arrays, struct types, etc. Likewise, a pointer can store the address of another pointer too, in which case it is called "pointer to pointer" (also called "double pointer"). A pointer-to-a-pointer is used when a reference to a pointer is required. For example, when you wish to modify the value (address pointed to) of a pointer variable declared in a calling function's scope inside a called function.
