Web Reference: Sep 6, 2025 · Java 8 introduced the Optional class in the java.util package to handle the problem of null values more gracefully. Instead of risking NullPointerException (NPE), Optional provides a container object that may or may not hold a non-null value. This is a value-based class; use of identity-sensitive operations (including reference equality (==), identity hash code, or synchronization) on instances of Optional may have unpredictable results and should be avoided. In this tutorial, we’re going to show the Optionalclass that was introduced in Java 8. The purpose of the class is to provide a type-level solution for representing optional values instead of nullreferences.
