Just like objects are created from classes, classes themselves are created from metaclasses. Essentially, instead of mucking around with the type metaclass, you can define your own metaclass, which derives from type, and then you can muck around with that instead. You won't be able to recreate something like type purely in Python, but Python cheats a little. To create your own metaclass in Python you really just want to subclass type.
