She was a patron of the arts and a hostess of Harlem's social and cultural scene in the 1920s. With an eye towards a Walker heir, the November 1923 wedding was A’Lelia Walker’s scheme to unite two prosperous black families: Mae with her inheritance from Madam Walker, who had died in 1919, and Dr. Gordon H. Jackson, the grandson of a Cincinnati coal dealer, who had been one of the 19th century’s wealthiest black businessmen. Born Fairy Mae Bryant, she was adopted by A'Lelia Walker and was the adoptive granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker. A graduate of Spelman Seminary in Atlanta, she served as the president of her grandmother's company at the time of her death.
