All its south side collapsed, and the Flavian Amphitheatre assumed its “characteristic” look that we can still admire today. It was devastated by the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, following which Nero seized much of the area to add to his personal domain. One of the main reasons why the Roman Colosseum was broken and partly destroyed is that, after the fall of Rome, most of the existing structures were used as materials to create new constructions. Moreover, in the 7th century, an earthquake in Rome destroyed part of the Colosseum.
