[1] Young was born in Fulton, Oswego County, New York, the second and only surviving child of civil engineer Joseph Henry Young and Minna Emma Pauline "Minnie" Adler. Carleton Young (1905-1994) was an American character actor who appeared in many Westerns, serials and John Ford films. He is best known for his role as Maxwell Scott in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) and his line "This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". Young met and married a soldier and actor named Carleton Young in 1945, who became spellbound after seeing her perform at Latin Quarter in New York. They remained married until he died in 1994.
